Every October 1st, the whole country takes a long holiday. Where did it come from? At 3 p.m. on October 1st, 1949, the founding ceremony was held in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. Three hundred thousand people were there. The first Five-Star Red Flag was raised here.

Fifty-four cannons fired twenty-eight salutes. Fifty-four stood for the groups and guests at the first Political Consultative Conference. Twenty-eight stood for the 28 years from 1921 to 1949. On that day, there was no such thing as National Day yet.

On October 9th, the Conference proposed making October 1st the National Day. On December 2nd, the Central People's Government made it official. From 1950 on, every October 1st has been National Day. At first, the holiday was two days. In 1999, it became three.

Move the nearby weekends next to it, and you get seven days in a row. That's Golden Week. So only three of the seven days are official holidays; the rest are borrowed weekends. Next time you're off for National Day, you'll know: the first day is a nation's birthday.

How the
seven-day break
is put together

The legal holiday is only 3 days (October 1 to 3). The other days are made by moving the weekends before and after the holiday over to join them into one whole week. This is called a "swap day" (tiaoxiu).

It isn't the same length every yearWhen the Mid-Autumn Festival falls close by, the two holidays run together and make 8 days. 2023 and 2025 both worked that way.
