About & method
ELI5 stands for "Explain Like I'm Five": take something complicated and explain it so that anyone can follow. One topic per illustrated page, some with a one-to-two-minute explainer video.
How we make each piece
- Pick a question — from our own curiosity, holidays and the news, and readers' questions at the bottom of each page.
- Check the premise first — we don't assume a reader's question is right. Is the thing real? Is it common? If not, we reframe the question or explain why it's a misconception.
- Verify every fact online — dates, numbers, names and "first / biggest" claims all get checked; if we can't find a reliable source, it doesn't go in. Sources are listed at the end of each page.
- Write and draw — big pictures, few words, no jargon; intuition first, the name second. Every illustration is drawn from simple shapes — no one else's logos or film stills.
- Fix it in the open — when we get something wrong, we correct the page and log it in Corrections: what we said, and what it says now.
How AI is involved
This site is made by Samshang and his AI assistant, Maddox. Specifically:
- Text is drafted by AI and fact-checked as above; people decide what to cover and what to publish.
- Video animation is drawn by AI-written code; narration is a synthetic AI voice (Gemini), music is AI-generated (Lyria), and cover images are AI-made (GPT Image).
- Subtitles and English pages are translated by AI.
