A burglar gets in. Would a golden retriever open the door for him? This September, in San Diego, it actually happened. A man climbed a ladder and slipped in through a second-floor window.

The golden inside, Nash, didn't bark. He didn't lunge. He picked up a toy, tail wagging, and brought it over, again and again. When the police came in, Nash greeted them with a toy too.

No door needed opening. But why can't he tell good guys from bad? Picture the two people at a shopping mall entrance. The greeter smiles at everyone. Whoever walks in is a guest.

The guard is different. He sizes you up, and stops you if something's off. The golden is the greeter of the dog world. And people picked that temperament, generation by generation.

Over a hundred and fifty years ago, a Scottish lord wanted a dog to help him hunt. After the shot, birds fell into water and grass. The dog had to find them and carry them back. Gently, without a bite mark. And it had to listen to people, not fight them.

Pups that bit or snarled didn't get to have litters. Even today, the golden's breed standard says: hostility toward people is a fault. That's why its full name is golden retriever. To retrieve means to fetch things back.

The guard type has a name too: protection dogs, like the German shepherd. They were bred the other way: guard the territory, and be wary of strangers. Researchers asked thousands of owners how their dogs act toward strangers.

Goldens landed in the gentlest group. So is a golden useless at guarding the house? Not quite. When burglars pick a house, a dog inside is one thing they weigh.

And plenty of goldens will bark when something stirs outside. It can't be the guard. But it can be a doorbell that barks. Nash's family called the police because their camera pinged their phone.

Leave guarding to locks and cameras, not your dog. And every dog is different; some goldens do bark at strangers. Your dog meets a burglar. Bark first, or bring a toy first?

1

In one line

It won’t need to open the door. But when a burglar gets in, a golden usually doesn’t bark or lunge. It brings him a toy.

It isn’t dumb. It was built to be a greeter, not a security guard.

This really
happened

September 2026, San Diego. The family golden is named Nash.

① Up a ladderA man climbs in through a second-floor window.
② Toys, pleaseNo barking, no lunging. Tail wagging, Nash brings him toy after toy.
③ Then the policeWhen officers walk in, Nash greets them with a toy too.

What called the police was a camera alert on a phone.

Two people at
a mall entrance

GREETER = GOLDEN
Smiles at everyone.
Come on in!
Full name: Golden Retriever. To retrieve means to fetch things back.
GUARD = GUARD DOG
Sizes you up.
Stops you if something’s off.
Like a German Shepherd: protects its turf, suspicious of strangers.

Put simply: goldens can’t tell good guys from bad because they were never shaped to stop anyone.

That temper was
bred in, on purpose

① Fetch the bird1860s Scotland: a lord wanted a dog to bring back the birds he shot.
② Soft mouthCarry the bird without crushing it. Come back, listen, don’t fight over it.
③ No mean parentsPuppies that bit or snarled didn’t get to have puppies.

Today the American Kennel Club standard still says: friendly, reliable, trustworthy. Hostility toward people is penalized.

A greeter can be retrained as a guard in a few days. A dog’s temper is largely bred over generations; a few days of training won’t flip it.

Thousands of owners
gave a score

Gentle Fierce Illustration

Researchers asked thousands of owners: is your dog aggressive toward strangers? Goldens and Labs landed in the gentlest group.

These are owner ratings, not lab measurements.

So it’s useless
as a watchdog?

A doorbell that barksMany goldens bark when they hear something
Burglars weigh itA dog inside is one thing they check
Use locksLock doors and windows first
Use camerasThat’s what alerted Nash’s family
7

One thing not
to ask of it

Don’t make your dog fight It can’t be the guard. Leave that to locks and cameras. Every dog is different, though: some goldens really do bark at strangers.
No door opening.
Probably a toy.
Your dog meets a burglar: bark first, or toy first?
