The little card
that answers
when you tap it

For total beginners · Key cards, hotel cards, anti-theft tags
are all the same trick
No. 3Inside Computers & the InternetPart 2 of 20
1

In one sentence

Stick a tiny tag on something that can talk back. Point a reader at it and the tag calls out its number: "I'm number 7."

The key card in your pocket, your hotel room card, that hard plastic tag on a new shirt: each has one of these inside.

2

How is it different
from the supermarket
"beep"?

BARCODE
The scanner has to "see" the black stripes
You have to flip it, aim it, and scan one item at a time. Covered, creased or dirty? It won't read.
RFID TAG
No line of sight needed. It answers through stuff.
Put a whole box on the counter and thirty items report in at once. No touching, no unpacking.

Put simply: one works by eyesight, the other by calling out. Calling out doesn't care about angles, and one shout can ask a whole room.

3

How does
it work?

1. Stick it onA thin paper tag: a loop of fine copper wire plus a chip the size of a sesame seed. No battery, so it sits dead most of the time.
2. The reader pingsThe reader sends out an invisible radio wave, like the beam of a flashlight.
3. The tag borrows powerThe copper loop catches the wave and collects a tiny bit of electricity, just enough to wake the chip. That is why it needs no battery.
4. Say your number, doneIt wakes up to do one thing: shout its own number back. Then it goes back to sleep.

So it can be thin enough to hide in a price tag, a plastic card, or a clothing seam. There is no battery to fit in.

4

Already
around you

Key cardsTap on the sensor and the door opens. No slot.
Clothing tagsToss a pile of clothes in a basket and ring them all up in one second
LibrariesStack the books on the pad and check them all out at once
Stock countsWalk a lap with a reader. No opening box after box.
Pet microchipsGrain-of-rice size, injected under the skin. A lost pet can be traced to its owner.
Shop door gatesWalk through with something unpaid and they sound the alarm

What they share: no more aiming and scanning one item at a time.

5

Two things
it doesn't do

It doesn't know who you are, and it can't track you Inside the tag there is only a string of digits. No name, no money, no personal info. Who or what that number belongs to is written in the shop's own computer. The tag itself knows nothing.

It can't follow you around either: a few steps away from the reader, nobody can hear it. It is not the kind of thing that chases you across the world.
So what is it actually good for?
Any job that means "count them one by one" becomes "count them all at once".
No queueing to scan items at checkout, no closing the shop to count stock all day.
Is it there? Is any missing? Wave a reader and you know.
