Before school starts, the teacher sends a form: please fill in your child's student record number. You freeze: what's a student record? Does my kid even have one? And it really happens: a child sits in class every day, yet the system has no trace of them.
A student record isn't a booklet. It's one entry in a nationwide network. Think of it as a supermarket loyalty card: one per person, with a number built on your child's ID number. The card keeps track of: which school, which grade, any transfers, and the year they graduate.
Who gets the card? Once your child starts primary school, the school sets it up. No application, no fee. That's where the card idea breaks down: you can skip a loyalty card, but a school is required to create the record. Since 2014, every student record in China has been linked into one network.
Move and switch schools, and the card goes with you: the new school starts the transfer online, and each school and education office has ten working days to finish. So what if there's no card? Good news first: the lessons themselves aren't affected.
Going to school is a child's right, protected by law. The record is created after a child enrolls. It's not a ticket to get in. The trouble comes at the checkpoints: transfers, the high school entrance exam, getting a diploma. Each one swipes the card. In 2019, at one school in Jincheng, Shanxi, hundreds of high schoolers had no official record and were told they couldn't get a regular diploma.
Why would a child have no card? Three common reasons. One: the school isn't licensed, so it can't issue records at all. Two: the child isn't registered yet and has no ID number. They can still get a number first, and it works for everything.
Three: the child studies at one school, but the card sits at another. Schools must now check records at least once a term. What to do? Step one: ask the head teacher for your child's record number, and make sure it exists. If the school is legit, ask it to create one. No household registration? Go to the police station first. The rules say no extra hoops.
If the school isn't licensed, go to the district education office and ask how to move to a proper school. You never see this card day to day. It only shows up at the checkpoints. Take a look early, and you won't panic later. When did you first hear the words "student record"? What grade was your child in?
A loyalty card that follows your child
In China, every school student has a xueji, a student record. It isn't a booklet; it's one entry in a nationwide network. Think of it as a supermarket loyalty card: one per person, with a number built on the child's ID number.
You don't apply. The school sets it up
Where the analogy breaks: you can skip a loyalty card, but a school is required to create the record. Since 2014, all records in China have been linked in one network.
No card? Classes go on
In 2019, hundreds of high schoolers at one school in Jincheng, Shanxi had no official record and were told they couldn't get a regular diploma. Education officials later stepped in to find a fix.
Why a child might have no card
No card? Three steps
Check early, and the checkpoints won't catch you off guard.
Quick check
A child goes to school, but the system has no record of them. What happens day to day?
The record is like a loyalty card: you don't swipe it at the door, only at checkout, so ask the head teacher for the number early.
