What exactly
is a debris flow?

It is not just "too much water". By the end you will know which way to run

In one sentence

A debris flow is not "water with some mud in it". It is a whole gully turned into flowing wet concrete.

The star of the show is the rock. Water is just what lets the rock flow. A whole gully of stones, mud and water churns together and rushes downhill, like a giant mixer truck of fresh concrete being poured down a mountain.

2

How is it different
from a flood?

FLOOD
Mostly water
A bucket of it weighs about what a bucket of water weighs. It can flood and sweep away people and cars, but it can't shove big boulders or house foundations.
DEBRIS FLOW
Mostly rock
The same bucket weighs about twice as much as clean water. That is not just "a bit heavier". It means it can move what a flood can't: boulders, cars, entire houses.

Put simply: a flood is water flowing. A debris flow is the mountain flowing.

3

It only comes when
three things line up

1. A steep gullyThe steep, narrow kind in the mountains. Like a funnel, it herds all the water and rock toward one opening.
2. A pile of loose rock and soilRubble and mud sitting in the gully. There is a lot of it after earthquakes, road building, or wildfires.
3. A big burst of waterA downpour, a mountain lake suddenly breaking its bank, snow melting too fast. What matters is "in a short time", not "a huge total".

Miss any one and it won't happen. Even the heaviest rain is fine without that loose pile, and a huge pile is fine if the water never comes.

4

Why is it
so deadly?

Forms in minutesIt may be raining upstream while the sky is clear downstream, so nobody sees it coming
Faster than youAt its fastest it moves over ten meters a second. You can't outrun it down the gully.
Walls won't stop itIt is heavy enough to push a house off its foundation, so hiding indoors isn't safe
Often comes in wavesDon't rush back after the first one. More usually follows.
5

The most
surprising part

This flat ground was piled up by past flows

In the mountains, the best spot to build houses and roads is often the flat land at the mouth of a gully: level, near water, easy to get in and out.

But that land is flat precisely because debris flows have piled up there again and again.

It is a fan-shaped apron of rock and sand. In other words: the reason it looks so good is that flows have come through many times before. It is where mountain disasters cluster, and that is no coincidence.

6

There are
warning signs

Hear or see any of these? Leave now. Don't watch.
  • The stream in the gully suddenly stops. Water that was flowing is gone, meaning something upstream is blocked. When the blockage gives way, that is when it comes down.
  • The water turns muddy all of a sudden, carrying twigs and gravel
  • A rumble like deep thunder with no thunder in the sky, mixed with the crack of snapping trees. This is the classic sign.
  • The ground trembles slightly, and the valley smells strongly of earth

These are not "wait and see" signals. They mean "go now". You usually have only a minute or two.

7

If it happens,
which way to run?

gully Sideways, uphill Sideways, uphill
Run sideways, up the slope beside the gully. Never run down the gully. It moves down the gully much faster than you, so running with it is a race you lose. But it only travels in the gully. Once you leave the gully and climb the slope beside it, you are safe. You don't need to go far. A few dozen meters is enough. Direction matters, not distance.
❌ Don't run down the gully (you can't win)
❌ Don't hide behind boulders, under bridges or behind trees (it carries boulders away too)
❌ Don't stay in a house (the whole house can be pushed away)
❌ Don't go back for your things (you have a minute or two)
❌ Don't return right after the first wave (a second one often follows)
A debris flow has one weakness:
it only follows gullies.
So the whole defense fits in two sentences. Don't choose a home at the mouth of a gully or inside one, and if it comes, climb sideways out of the gully. Right direction: a few dozen meters is the difference between life and death. Wrong direction: no distance helps.
