A dog's drool often shows up before the food does. You've barely torn open the treat bag, nothing's out yet, and its chin is already wet. It hasn't tasted a thing. It's going on a sound it remembers.

Saliva's real job is to help with eating. Dogs hardly chew. They gulp. Saliva coats the food and makes it slippery, so it slides down the throat into the stomach.

So the moment meat hits the mouth, the saliva comes. That part is built in. No learning needed. The strange part is when it starts before any food arrives. Over a century ago, the scientist Ivan Pavlov was studying how dogs digest food.

He fitted a thin tube by the dog's mouth to collect and count the saliva, drop by drop. Then a problem turned up: the meat wasn't even out yet, and the dogs were already dripping. Some drooled at the feeder's footsteps. Some drooled at the sight of his white lab coat.

Instead of treating it as a nuisance, he built a new experiment around it. Before every meal, a metronome would tick for a while, and then the meat came. After many rounds, he played just the ticking, no meat, and the dogs drooled anyway.

The dogs had learned that sound meant dinner. It's a bit like a restaurant kitchen: the door chime rings, and before the cook even sees a customer, the pan is heating and the oil is in. The moment the food lands, it's ready to cook.

And it's not just the mouth warming up. Pavlov found that seeing meat also gets the stomach's digestive juices flowing early. This has a name: a conditioned reflex. Drooling when food is in the mouth is inborn. Drooling at an unrelated sound is learned.

In your home, that sound might be a can's pull tab or the fridge door. A rustling treat bag, even your steps into the kitchen. Those sounds are the door chime. That puddle on your dog's chin is the oil already in the pan. Some dogs drool more than others, like big dogs with loose, droopy lips. They can't seal their mouths, so it spills out.

But if the drool suddenly increases with no food around, and your dog won't eat or keeps pawing at its mouth, it's time to see a vet. Which sound gets your dog the most? Next mealtime, make just that sound first, count the seconds until the drool starts, then serve dinner. Come back and tell us: how many seconds did it take?

1

The drool arrives first

You tear open the treat bag. Nothing is out yet, and its chin is already wet.

It hasn't tasted anything. It heard that one sound and knew food was coming.

2

Saliva helps food go down

Dogs hardly chew. They gulp. Saliva coats the food and makes it slippery, so it slides down the throat into the stomach.

Human saliva starts breaking down starch. Dog saliva has very little of that enzyme, so its main job is lubrication.

So when meat hits the mouth, saliva comes right away. That part is built in. No learning needed.

3

A problem that became an experiment

Over a century ago, the scientist Ivan Pavlov studied how dogs digest food. He wanted to count saliva drop by drop, but one thing kept getting in the way.

Count dropsA thin tube by the dog's mouth drips saliva into a cup
No meat yetFootsteps or a white lab coat start the drip
Tick, then feedBefore every meal, a metronome ticks for a while
Tick aloneAfter many rounds, the dogs drool with no meat at all

The dogs learned that the sound meant dinner.

Pavlov also found that seeing meat gets the stomach's digestive juices flowing early.

The kitchen chime and the hot oil

RESTAURANT KITCHEN
The door chime rings, and the cook heats the pan and adds oil
Before the customer sits down, the pan is ready to cook
YOUR DOG
The mealtime sound plays, and the mouth gets saliva ready
Food goes in and slides right down

One difference: the cook chooses to preheat. The dog can't choose to stop drooling.

The door chime is the sounds in your home. The oil already in the pan is the drool on your dog's chin.

More drool isn't always hunger

Big dogs with loose, droopy lips can't seal their mouths, so drool spills out. That comes from their face shape.

Sudden drooling with no food around If your dog also won't eat or keeps pawing at its mouth, something may be wrong with its teeth, mouth or stomach. See a vet and follow their advice.
It's not just greedy. It remembers the sound of dinner.
Next mealtime, make just that sound first. Count the seconds until the drool starts, then serve dinner.
