Can a dog get sick from sniffing pee on its walks? It presses its nose to a puddle by the wall, and sniffs, and sniffs again. Every owner watching feels a little jolt. Sniffing pee is how a dog reads the letters other dogs leave.

But now and then, something else is tucked inside the envelope. Let's pick the one that matters most, and follow it. It's a germ shaped like a tightly wound little spring. Its name is Leptospira.

Its favorite home is a rat's kidneys. The rat itself barely gets sick. But it pees as it goes, dropping the germ by walls, in grass and in puddles. Take a guess: once it lands in a puddle after rain, how long does it last? A day, a week, or months?

The answer: weeks, even months. It hates drying out and loves warm, wet places. So it's most common in summer, in autumn, and after rain. So how does it get into a dog?

Think of a kitchen. You stand by the stove and smell dinner. The smell drifts into your nose, but the food never reaches your mouth. Sniffing pee works the same way: what drifts in is the smell. The germs stay soaked in the pee. They don't float along with it.

The germ's real doorway is in the mouth, the eyes and the nose: that soft, wet lining, plus any cut in the skin. So the things to watch for are: a lick, a drink from a puddle, or a nose pressed right into it. That's not just smelling dinner. That's taking a bite.

One way the comparison breaks down: you smell dinner from across the room, but a dog sniffs up close. A brush of the nose counts as half a bite. So sniffing alone is a small risk. Licking and drinking are the big ones. And this isn't the only thing pee can carry.

The distemper virus can come out in pee too, but mostly it spreads through the air, by sneezes and coughs. Parvovirus hides mainly in poop. So the poop on the sidewalk is the thing to steer clear of. The good news: there are vaccines for all of these.

Distemper and parvo are in the basic set every puppy gets. The Leptospira shot is in some combo vaccines and not others, and it needs a booster every year. Ask your vet which ones your dog needs. On walks, don't let it drink from puddles. At home, wipe its mouth and paws.

One more surprise: this germ can infect people too. In China, most cases are in the south, in late summer and early autumn, among people wading through paddies and floodwater. After you clean up your dog's pee, wash your hands too. Grab your dog's vaccine booklet: is Leptospira on it?

1

A tiny spring
in the envelope

When a dog sniffs pee, it is reading mail from other dogs: who came by, how big they are, and when.

Sometimes something else is tucked in the envelope: a tightly wound red spring.

It is a germ called Leptospira. Long name. Just remember “the tiny spring”.

The spring
comes from rats

① Lives in rat kidneysThe rats barely get sick.
② Drops out with peeBy walls, in grass, in puddles.
③ Waits in puddlesIt can last weeks to months.

It hates dry and loves warm and wet. So watch out in summer autumn after rain.

Smelling dinner
is not tasting it

SMELL
The smell reaches your nose; the food stays in the pot
Pee works the same way: the smell floats up, the springs stay in the pee.
TASTE
A lick, or a drink from a puddle
That is what actually puts it in the mouth.

Where the comparison breaks: a dog sniffs up close. A nose pushed into the pee counts as half a bite.

it gets in by

NosePushed into pee
CutsA scratch on a paw

Sniffing alone is a small risk.
Licking and drinking are the big ones.

Pee carries
more than this

DISTEMPER
Can be in pee, but mainly spreads through the air
One sneeze from a sick dog sends out a big cloud.
PARVO
Mainly in poop
On walks, steer clear of other dogs’ poop.

The third box
in the vaccine book

Distemper and parvo are in the core shots; the lepto shot is only in some combo vaccines It needs a booster every year. Ask your vet which shots your dog needs.

Two small habits: no drinking from puddles, and wipe its mouth and paws when you get home.

7

It can reach
people too

In China, most human cases are in the south, in late summer and early autumn, among people working in flooded rice fields.

After touching your dog or puddle water, wash your hands.

Sniffing is a small risk.
Licking and drinking are the big ones.
Check your dog’s vaccine book: is leptospirosis on it?
