About one in seven teenagers has a mental health condition. That's the World Health Organization's figure. A survey of over thirty thousand Chinese students found nearly the same: one in seven at risk of depression. Many adults shrug: kids have everything now, they're just too soft.

But kids haven't gotten weaker. The water just can't drain. Picture a child's mind as a bathroom sink. Tests, homework, scoldings, fights with friends all pour in from the tap.

At the bottom are a few drains: a good night's sleep, free play, someone who listens. A running tap is fine. As long as the drains are clear, the sink won't overflow. When today's parents were kids, they dropped their bags after school and played outside until dark.

No adults in charge. They made the rules, fought, and made up on their own. That unsupervised time was a big drain. Researchers lined up decades of data.

Time for kids to roam and decide for themselves kept shrinking. Over the same years, anxiety and depression kept rising. Their view: running your own play teaches you 'I can handle my own life.' That confidence is what absorbs stress. Now the sleep drain. China's guideline says primary schoolers need ten hours a night.

Yet in reality, ninety-five out of a hundred don't get it. Homework, tutoring, scrolling in bed usually eat into exactly this. How much phones harm kids is still hotly debated. But they do take time from sleep and play.

There's one more layer: people understand these conditions better now, so kids who'd once be missed get noticed. So part of the rise is simply seeing more clearly. An overflowing sink is easy to spot. A full mind often hides.

Doctors call it anxiety or depression. A common sign: two weeks or more of low mood, poor sleep, no interest in what they used to love. If you see this, don't call it softness. Take them to a doctor, and follow the doctor's advice. So kids haven't gone soft. They've lost their drains.

Tonight, give them a stretch of time nobody plans. Where did you run off to play after school as a kid?

One in
seven kids

It is 10:30 at night. The homework is finally done. Your child puts their head on the desk and says, "I'm so tired."

The World Health Organization says about one in seven young people aged 10 to 19 has a mental health condition.

China looks similar. In 2022 the Chinese Academy of Sciences surveyed more than 30,000 school students. 14.8% showed some level of depression risk.

"Risk" comes from a screening questionnaire. It is not a diagnosis.

Many people think: kids today are too soft. But kids did not get weaker. The water inside them has nowhere to drain.

A child's mind
is like a sink

The tap is stress: tests, homework, getting told off, falling out with friends. Every kid has these.

There are three drains: sleep, free play, and someone who listens.

Water flows in, water flows out, and the sink never fills up.

After school,
back then

THEN
Drop the bag, play till dark
Kids made their own rules and made up after fights. No schedule, no one watching.
NOW
Homework and tutoring, back to back
Time they control themselves gets eaten up, piece by piece.

Researchers looked at decades of data. Kids' free play and independence went down. Over the same years, anxiety and depression went up.

They argue this is one of the main causes. Free play teaches a child "I can handle my own life." That feeling is a shield against stress.

This is the researchers' view from a review, not a settled fact.

The most blocked
drain: sleep

China's rule: primary pupils should sleep 10 hours a day, middle schoolers 9, high schoolers 8.

Under 10 hours: 95.5% Primary pupils · China National Mental Health Report 2019–2020

In reality, about 95 out of 100 primary pupils fall short. Homework, tutoring and phones get stuffed into this drain one by one.

Researchers still argue about how much harm phones do. What is clear: they take time away from sleep and play.

More on sleep: Why am I sleepy in class after eight hours of sleep?

5

Part of it is
seeing more clearly

Parents, teachers and doctors know more now. Kids who were once written off as "moody" or "just quiet" now get noticed.

So the numbers grew partly because there are more cases, and partly because we see better.

A full sink shows.
A full mind hides.

When the mind's sink overflows, it has names: anxiety and depression. Three common signs:

14 Two weeks+low mood
Poor sleeprestless nights
No intereststops playing
If you see this, take your child to a doctor. These are only common signs. Don't diagnose at home. Let a doctor decide what it is and what to do.

When teens stop talking: Why do kids stop talking to parents as they grow up?

Kids didn't get softer.
They lost their drains.

Why do the youngest kids need love the most?

Pick up a crying baby and walk, and their heart slows right down. The younger the child, the more they borrow your calm.
