GET IT AT A GLANCE

What is
Tailscale?

Makes all your machines feel like they're still in one room
No. 23Inside Computers & the InternetPart 11 of 20
1

The short version

Our key card

It hands every one of your machines a "family key card." After that, no matter which city they're in, they act as if they're still in the same room.

Only machines holding the card can recognize each other. Outsiders can't even see where the door is.

2

What hassle it saves you

BEFORE
To reach your home machine from outside, you had to crack your front door open to the world
You also had to remember a string of house numbers that keep changing, and once the door is cracked open, any passerby can try pushing it.
NOW
The door stays fully shut
Both machines reach out from inside and meet in the middle. Without a card, nobody even knows where the door is.

Put simply: you don't leave the house open and wait for visitors. Your own people step out and meet up.

3

How it works

1. Hand out cardsInstall it on each machine and sign in once with your account
2. Give namesEach machine gets a fixed name. From then on, just use the name, no numbers to remember
3. Connect directlyThe two machines find the shortest path themselves, passing through no one
4. Detour only if blockedIf the direct path fails, it takes a detour, but whoever relays can't read the contents
4

What people use it for

Use your home machine while awayOn a trip or out and about, you can still open it
View photos and files stored at homeNo need to upload them to someone else's cloud drive first
Let a faraway machine do the workPlace an order, print, run a job
Stop memorizing those numbersNumbers change, names don't

What they share in one line: "I'm not there, but I can still use that machine."

5

Two things it is not

It's not a speed booster It doesn't make your internet faster, and it isn't for getting into other people's websites. It does one thing only: connect your own machines together.
It can't see what you send, either. Everything is locked before it leaves, and the keys are held only by your two machines. Even if it takes a detour, whoever relays it gets a box they can't open.
"I don't have a roomful of machines. Is it for me?"
If you have a second one:
the computer at home you never turn off, the drive that stores your photos,
the machine at the office, even a little box.

What it removes is the sentence
"I have to get home to do that."

What Is an Edge Computer?

A small computer placed where things happen: it looks first, picks what matters, and sends only that to a big one far away. It sends less, not more.
