You don't need to code to understand programmers' acronyms. In a meeting, he says: plug in the SDK, go through MCP, run it with the CLI. The only word you caught was "run." The trick is in the tail: the last letter tells you what kind of thing it is.

If it ends in I, it's an opening: the place where you deal with something. Think of a restaurant. You don't walk into the kitchen; you order at the counter. One kind is the ordering screen, where you tap pictures. That's a GUI, a graphical interface: everything you tap on your phone.

The other kind is a note straight to the kitchen, one line saying what you want. That's a CLI, a command line. Programmers love it because one line does the work of ten taps. And it can be saved and reused. It looks like this: a dark window, filled with lines of text. On a Mac it's Terminal; on Windows, Command Prompt.

Another common I is API. It's the opening between two programs, like a restaurant's pass-through window. A delivery app never enters your kitchen. It slides a fixed-format order through the window, and the food comes back out. When an app borrows someone else's skills, like maps or payments, it goes through their API.

If it ends in K, it's a whole kit. SDK means software development kit. Like a sauce maker that wants you to use its sauce, so it sends a whole box: sauce packets, instructions, and a special spoon. An SDK is that box: everything you need to hook into a platform, packed and ready to use.

If it ends in P, it's a set of rules: a protocol. Everyone agrees to work in one format. MCP is a set of rules for AI: the Model Context Protocol. AI is like a new chef: sharp, but it can't reach the fridge or open the books.

Before, every AI needed its own adapter for every tool. MCP set one shared order format. Build a tool to it once, and any AI that speaks MCP can plug in. In an AI app's settings you may see "MCP servers." Each one is a tool, like reading your calendar or searching your files.

Try two more: the P in HTTP is the rule web pages travel by. The E in IDE is environment, the whole kitchen where code gets written. This trick works beyond computers. In ICU, the U stands for unit: the intensive care unit. In your line of work, which acronym leaves outsiders most lost?

1

In one line

SDK

Lost in an acronym? Look at the last letter. It tells you what kind of thing it is: a doorway, a toolbox, or a set of rules.

An engineer says, "Plug in the SDK, go through MCP, run it in the CLI." By the end of this page, you will know what all three are.

2

Ends in I:
a doorway

I stands for Interface. It is the doorway you use to deal with something, without caring how it works inside. Think of a restaurant: you don't walk into the kitchen to eat. You order at the counter.

GUI · graphical interfaceLike a touchscreen menu: look at pictures, tap. Everything you tap on your phone is one.
CLI · command lineLike passing a written note to the kitchen. One line can replace ten taps, and you can save it to reuse.
API · program interfaceThe doorway between programs, like a kitchen pass. A delivery app never enters the kitchen; it hands over a fixed-format slip and the food comes out.

What a command line looks like: a dark window full of lines of text. On a Mac it is called Terminal; on Windows, Command Prompt.

3

Ends in K:
a whole kit

SDK = Software Development Kit.

A sauce maker who wants you to cook with its sauces sends a whole box: packets, a booklet, a special spoon. An SDK is that box. The code, docs and tools for connecting to one platform come packed together, ready to use.

So "add the WeChat SDK" (WeChat is China's biggest messaging app) means: put that company's box into our own app.

4

Ends in P:
a set of rules

P stands for Protocol: everyone agrees to do things in one format. MCP is a protocol for AI, the Model Context Protocol, released by Anthropic in November 2024.

An AI is like a new chef: sharp, but it can't reach the fridge or open the books.

BEFORE
3 AIs, 4 tools: 12 custom adapters
Every AI needed its own adapter for every tool.
WITH MCP
Each side connects once:
3 + 4 = 7
Any AI that speaks MCP can plug in. Its makers call it "a USB-C port for AI".

See "MCP servers" in an AI app's settings? Each one is a tool, like reading your calendar or searching files. More in our episode A power strip for AI.

Try it on
a few more

HTTP P = rulesHow web pages travel
IDE E = environmentThe whole kitchen where code gets written
ICU U = unitA hospital's intensive care unit
GUI I = doorwayGUI, CLI and API all belong here

ICU shows the trick works beyond computers. How HTTP gets a page to your phone: How a web page works.

6

Where the
analogy breaks

A cook can guess.
A program can't.
A cook can read a messy "2 beef noodles". Get one character wrong in an API or MCP request and the program rejects it. That is why these rules are so strict.
Next time,
check the last letter
I is a doorway, K is a kit, P is a set of rules. In your line of work, which acronym confuses outsiders most?
