GOT IT AT A GLANCE

Ten brands,
one maker
behind them

For anyone who has used smart bulbs or plugs
without knowing what makes them work

1

In one line

It doesn't make switches, and it doesn't make lamps. It makes the tiny "ears and mouth" tucked inside the switch, plus the face on your phone.

Which explains something odd: smart devices from three or four brands at home come with phone apps that look almost identical. It is the same thing wearing different names.

2

How it differs from
what you assume

YOU THINK
Each brand builds its own
The smarter the switch, the more skilled the maker
IN FACT
The smarts are bought in
A small circuit board, a phone app and a relay room that passes messages for them, all sold as a bundle to switch factories. The factory just makes the switches it always knew how to make.

Put simply: "smart" has become a component, as easy to buy as a screw. That is why shelves filled with smart gadgets almost overnight. Not every factory suddenly got clever; the part just became very easy to buy.

You press once.
What happens in between?

① A tiny board insideFingernail-sized. It joins your home WiFi and can talk
② Check in at power-upIt joins your WiFi and tells the online room: I'm here
③ You tap "On" on your phoneThe message goes to that room first, which passes it to the switch
④ It replies "I'm on"Only then does the button light up on your phone. What lights up is the reply, not your tap

That is how you can switch on your home lights from another city: you and the switch never talk directly. You each just call out in the same room.

4

What can it do
once installed?

One phrase, all offNo walking around at closing time
Fans follow the lightsLights on = people here = air needed
Off when emptyStill on after hours of no motion? Announce, then switch off
Doubles as a meterIt counts how much power this circuit used today
Even the ACA little box presses the remote for you
No phone neededA wall tablet anyone can tap

All of this is running in one barbecue restaurant right now: twelve lights, two exhaust fans and four air conditioners, all on this one system.

5

Three things worth
knowing first

When the internet drops,
it may play dead
Your message has to go the long way round, and if that detour breaks, your tap does nothing. Some devices can talk face to face inside your own network. Those still work when the outside internet is down but your home network is up. Worth asking before you buy.
"Seeing" and "being in charge"
are two different things
The AC in the restaurant got a small add-on: on the phone you can see that it's on, what it is set to, how hot the room is. But when you tap, it doesn't budge. It is a spectator, not a commander. Eyes and mouth are simply two separate things sold separately.
Every tap you make
passes through someone else's house
The relay room isn't yours; it belongs to the vendor. When the lights went on, when the shop closed: records of all of it sit there. Convenience, and "someone knows what time you get home," are two sides of the same coin.
Before buying, ask one thing:
if the internet is down, does it still obey?
That one question saves you most of the regret. A home outage, a router restart, a new broadband plan: the switches that only know the long way round all play dead together, and you are left holding a phone that controls nothing.

The brand is a sticker. The board inside is the real thing.
