In twenty fourteen, someone claimed a Tibetan Mastiff sold for twelve million yuan. Back then it was hailed as a wonder dog, said to take on a whole wolf pack alone. So how tough is it really, up on its home plateau?

The answer is a surprise: its greatest skill isn't fighting wolves. First, look at where it lives. Herders pitch their tents on pastures more than four thousand meters up.

Each breath there holds only about sixty percent of the oxygen at sea level. On winter nights, twenty below is normal. Take a big lowland dog up there, and it pants after a few strides.

The Mastiff doesn't. Its secret is in its blood. The part of blood that carries oxygen is called hemoglobin. A Mastiff's hemoglobin grips oxygen tighter, so it fills up even in thin air.

Stranger still, it got this gift from wolves. By comparing genes, scientists found that long ago, the Mastiff's ancestors had pups with plateau wolves. The wolves' genes for thin air stayed on in the Mastiff.

It also has a double coat: the outer layer blocks wind and snow, the inner one is like a quilted jacket, so it can sleep right on the snow. With a body this tough, its job up there is simple: guarding. Herders graze sheep by day, and at night it keeps watch by the tent and the pen.

When a wolf comes close, it stands up, growls low, then barks loud. Most of the time, the wolf just leaves, and nobody gets bitten. It's like a goalkeeper: it doesn't need to beat the other side, it wins as long as no ball gets in.

That's exactly what herders want: no sheep lost, and no dog hurt. Dogs like this have a proper name: livestock guardian dogs. Herding cultures around the world have them, guarding the flock and the home. So the Mastiff's magic is enduring and guarding, not fighting.

But move it to the city, and neither skill is any use. In a northern summer above thirty degrees, that thick coat becomes a burden, and it just lies there panting. When the craze ended, Mastiffs lost their value, and many were abandoned.

Some ended up back on the plateau, roaming in packs and chasing wildlife, even ganging up on snow leopards. That twelve million figure came from the seller himself, and some in the trade called it hype. It's still the same cold-proof guardian. It just has no sheep left to guard.
